Safety, Health, and Wellness
Ironwork is the pillar of modern infrastructure. With such a physically and mentally demanding job, it ranks highest per capita, for suicide rates than any other construction industry. In addition, Oklahoma ranks 5th in the nation for Any Mental Illness, according to Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services.
According to the CDC, men in the construction industry have the 2nd highest suicide rate compared to other industry groups. Because the construction industry is male-dominated, with 97% of the workforce being male, there is a stigma when dealing with problems and emotions that an individual may be experiencing. The common attitude for Ironworkers is seeing themselves as having to be “tough or thick-skinned”, but asking for help is not a sign of weakness.
Here at Ironworkers Local 584, we are trying to promote more awareness and provide resources for our men and women to get the help they need when it comes to mental health and substance abuse. Let's break down the mental health stigma.
